Since being introduced as a methodology over 15 years ago, Design Thinking has been gaining more of a foothold in Business and Marketing. Pioneered by ideo, it is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.

The five steps of Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test are familiar to more creatively driven industries, but this approach is revolutionizing others from healthcare to hospitality. Industry giants like IBM and GE have adopted the practice as have top business schools like MIT’s Sloan School of Management. The Design Thinking process and its mindsets can be used to achieve true innovation in products, services or entire experiences.

Learn the five steps of Design Thinking in an immersive, hands-on workshop where you will take an idea from a theory to something you can actually share and test with your “customer.” Through the workshop, you’ll learn not only the method but also the mindsets necessary to bring this approach to problem solving into your daily work. It also allows people who aren’t trained as designers to use creative tools to address a vast range of challenges, solving for desirability, viability, and feasibility.

AGENDA
i. Introduction: What is Design Thinking?
ii. Crash Course Introduction and Exercise – each of the five steps will be introduced and then practiced immediately.
iii. Empathy: Observe to learn about empathy and what people need.
iv. Define: Understand what was discovered.
v. Ideate: Go beyond the obvious.
vi. Prototype: Build prototypes to learn.
vii. Test: Build like you know everything. Test like you know nothing.
viii. Questions and Discussion.

This event is ideal for individuals or small teams who are tasked with coming up with new products, services or experiences. You don’t have to be a “designer” to benefit. In fact, this course is often the most beneficial in instilling creative confidence in people who don’t consider themselves creative.

Speakers:
Tim Letscher and Laura Griebenow

Tim Letscher has more than 25 years of experience developing brands and innovative solutions for both small businesses and Fortune 500 clients. He excels in the innovation and execution strategy for programs that guide client interactions online and across the broader digital and physical experience. Client experience includes Securian, Ecolab, Buffalo Wild Wings, Be the Match, Subaru, HP, Land O’Lakes, Purina, Caribou Coffee, and USA Swimming. Tim has spoken at SXSW on the future of social media and human behavior and frequently publishes POVs on LinkedIn and Medium. He leads a group of Experience Strategists, Service Designers and UX Experts who provide steady guidance both on what to do now and how to prepare for the future.

Tim has held strategic leadership positions at numerous agencies and venture companies in the Twin Cities, Northern California and Chicago. His earlier career as a designer allows him to specialize in software design, brand identities, commercial website design and interactive marketing.

At Slalom he excels in finding simple solutions to complex challenges, and leverages an end-to-end understanding of the digital landscape from strategy to UX/design to technology/platforms to ensure a well-rounded solution driving value for both users and business alike.

Laura Griebenow is a multifunctional experience design consultant that designs impactful digital products and physical experiences with a human-centered approach. Laura’s approach on projects allows her to see projects through from discovery to execution and delivery.

Laura’s client experience includes companies such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Ameriprise, HealthFitness, AARP, US Bank, Be The Match, BrightPeak Financial, HealthPartners, Animal Humane Society and Milestone AV Technologies. In addition, Laura spends time mentoring students through speaking engagements and facilitating design thinking trainings for professionals.

At Slalom, Laura collaborates with cross-functional teams and leverages qualitative and quantitative research to improve the outcomes for her clients.

Pre-registration closes on Friday 20th at midnight prior to the event at which point walk-in registration fees will apply for members, student members and nonmembers.

Cancellations received by the office at least two business days prior to the event are eligible for a refund of the registration fee. No refunds will be provided for cancellations received fewer than two business days prior to the event. No-shows will be billed for any unpaid registration fees.

Switch-outs
If you have registered, are unable to attend, and would like to give your co-worker your “ticket,” please note that a pre-registered member to non-registered member switch-out is free. Switch-outs from members to non-members will execute an invoice to the attendee for payment after the event.
